Ugh. They are probably way more subtle than they look to me when I look in the mirror, my eyes zero right in them every time. There’s nothing I hate more than these horrific smoker’s lines—also known as lipstick lines, especially since I don’t even smoke. What’s worse, there’s not much you can do about it, only stuff you can stop doing, like puckering. Apparently, you have to stop making duck faces in selfies, puckering when you apply your lipstick, kissing your man, and sipping from a straw. Yep, seriously.
The thing is, even though I am aware of all of these no-no’s, I was starting to get the feeling that short of injecting some magic potion into my upper lip, I’d be forced to live with, and learn to accept, unsightly lip wrinkles for life. So of course, when Dermalogica offered up their new nightly lip treatment that’s supposed to leave “feathering” to the birds, I jumped at the chance to try it. And the good news is, I like it.
How You Get Smoker’s Lines (even if you don’t smoke)
As we age, the formation of vertical lines above the upper lip, sagging in the perioral (mouth) region, and feathering outside of the lips become more pronounced—especially for those with a history of smoking (okay, yes, I was stupid in my youth). Though the eyes are often thought to show the first signs of aging, the lip and mouth area develop some of the most dramatic visible differences.
Both intrinsic (physiological) and extrinsic (external) factors contribute. Lips lack the protective outer layer (Stratum Corneum) that facial skin has, and fewer layers overall (3-5 layers versus the face’s 16). Lips also lack the same composition of oil and sweat glands that provide moisture to other areas of the face, while at the same time, saliva dries out lips’ natural oils. As a result, moisture evaporates from lips faster than the rest of the face, contributing to visible lines and feathering.
Aging in the mouth region, including marionette lines and nasolabial folds, can also be caused from collagen breakdown from damaging UV rays, trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), smoking, drinking through a straw, and whistling. It’s no laughing matter: lip lines can be caused by using your lips!
Why We Love the New Dermalogica Nightly Lip Treatment
The promise? This super-hydrating pump moisturizer is supposed to smooth away laugh and feather lines while you sleep. Unfortunately, it probably depends how long you wait to discover this rich overnight formula. While it doesn’t reverse lines, using it nightly seems so smooth them a little. You feel a surge of moisture going on in the area, as the ingredients work to firm, hydrate, and restore skin on and around the lips, improve skin elasticity, and help control aging before it starts.
What’s in this stuff exactly?
- Indian Gentian Extract helps reduce skin fragility and reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the lips
- Volumizing technology helps to volumize lips and reduce the appearance of fine lines
- Sesame Seed Extract helps smooth and decrease the appearance of nasolabial fold lines, wrinkles, and roughness increases hydration and improves skin elasticity while restoring barrier function against visible signs of aging
- Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract and Glycerin complex helps enhance skin hydration and smooth lips
- Skin repairs itself during sleep, making nighttime an ideal time to treat and prevent skin aging. To use, after cleansing, apply Nightly Lip Treatment generously, and massage into skin on and around the lip area
What do we think?
I should have been using this lip treatment a couple of years ago, before the vertical grooves in my upper lip area appeared. Clearly, this product is best used preventatively—but who among us was seriously worried about wrinkles before they appeared? I wasn’t and at this point in the game, hydration is not going to reverse them, and I know that. But there is good news. I do find that the moisture surge feels soothing on the upper lip and and I’m pretty sure I’ve stopped the grooves from deepening further. In fact, I’ve gotten addicted to using this Nightly Lip Treatment, and by the way, I’ve been slicking it on under my makeup during the day as well.
Plus, it’s cute. And handy to toss in your purse. It comes in an 10 mL bottle featuring an airless pump and cooling metal applicator. Just pump a little of the moisturizer onto your finger, and smooth it onto the area you want softened. Then let it go to work.
