The glitter and sparkles of the holiday season have given way to the cold and dreary new year—but believe it or not, we’re kinda happy about it. Now we have every excuse to stay warm and dry inside the cozy comfort of our homes, on our couches, watching TV. While some of our favourite new fall shows like Timeless and No Tomorrow, are wrapping up, we’re all set to settle back into the greatness of shows we’ve missed—Scandal, HomelandSuits and The Affair, just to name a few.

As usual, though, the best part of new year TV is the new crop of mid-season shows we’re set to get acquainted with. All the more reason to stay in and make a date with your couch.

6 NEW TV SHOWS FOR YOUR WINTER WATCHING

1. NEW SHOW: THE YOUNG POPE

  • WHERE: HBO
  • WHEN: January 15

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Already taking the internet by storm and being nicknamed the Bad Pope, the Young Pope has already spawned hilarious memes online and it hasn’t even aired in North America yet. Jude Law plays a American archbishop who becomes the youngest pope of all time and is a thorn in the side of the Catholic Church establishment. For instance, he reverses the Vatican’s smoking ban—but only for himself, of course. And he drinks Cherry Coke for breakfast.

WHY WE LOVE IT: This Pontiff is young, handsome and cunning. It feels so good to be bad.

2. NEW SHOW: VICTORIA

  • WHERE: PBS
  • WHEN: January 15

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Netflix has a hit with The Crown (the story of a young Queen Elizabeth) and fans will want to tune in to learn about young Queen Victoria on PBS. The eight episode series follow the spirited monarch from when she becomes Queen at the age of 18 through to her marriage with Prince Albert.

WHY WE LOVE IT: We are perpetually fascinated by the intrigues and scandals of the royal court. We just can’t seem to get enough high brow. Why is that?

3. NEW SHOW: SANTA CLARITA DIET

  • WHERE: Netflix
  • WHEN: February 3

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: The lives of a couple of realtors becomes topsy turvy when the wife goes through a dramatic change – one that you will never guess until it happens! This dark comedy follows the couple and their teenage daughter as their lives go down a road of death and destruction.

WHY WE LOVE IT: We love star Drew Barrymore so much. She reminds us of that friend that we have known our whole lives.

4. NEW SHOW: BIG LITTLE LIES

  • WHERE: HBO
  • WHEN: February 19

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Reese Witherspoon. Nicole Kidman. Laura Dern and producer David E. Kelley (of Ally McBeal fame). With that lineup alone, we’re in. The characters may all be mothers but that is not the main focus of the show. One kills another but who does what to whom isn’t revealed until the end.

WHY WE LOVE IT: So many possible twists and turns. That’s the way to get a woman hooked on a show, we say.

5. NEW SHOW: BLACK LIST REDEMPTION

  • WHERE: NBC
  • WHEN: February 23
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: One of the greatest characters on the tube right now is James Spader’s Raymond (Red) Reddington on The Blacklist. (PS. If you haven’t watch The Blacklist yet, do yourself a favour and binge it now.) So it wasn’t a surprise when this spinoff series was announced based on Red’s list of elusive criminals.

WHY WE LOVE IT: The best of the baddest come together to seek “redemption” (see what they did there?) for past deeds by taking on problems governments won’t touch.

6. NEW SHOW: TAKEN

  • WHERE: NBC
  • WHEN: February 27

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: From the moment Liam Neeson’s Brian Mills in the film version of Taken uttered the words I will find you. And I will kill you, audiences knew that he wasn’t to be messed with. The television version of Taken follows a younger Brian’s journey after a family tragedy as he acquires those “particular set of skills”.

WHY WE LOVE IT: Call this one a prequel but set in current times. Starring the ridiculously charming Clive Standen of Vikings and one of our oldest girl crushes, Jennifer Beals. Intrigued much?
